What you need to know before Flag Day

Flag Day will be observed on Wednesday, June 14th. Since 1916, one day a year has been set to honor Old Glory. Prior to Flag Day, the flags we fly at our homes or businesses should be inspected to determine if they need to be replaced. If your flag shows age from the weather, tattering from the wind, or faded from the sunlight, the flag should be replaced.

What happens when a U.S. Flag is retired? The recommended method established in U.S. Code is that the Flag of the United States, when retired, is to be deposed of by burning. For some people, burning an American flag is, in part, sacrilegious. A flag retirement ceremony, as it is more fittingly called is the proper way. According to Robert Harrington, Commander of Joplin’s American Legion Post 13, “Burning is the proper way to dispose of a flag, but it doesn’t end there. Caring for the ashes and respectfully burying them is part of the process as well.”

Robert S. Thurman American Legion Post 13 will conduct a Flag Retirement Ceremony at 5:30 p.m. on Flag Day, June 14th. The event will occur on the lawn in front of Memorial Hall, at 8th & Joplin. The public is welcome to use the Post’s flag disposal box located on the corner of 8th and Joplin Avenue anytime throughout the year or participate in the Flag Retirement Ceremony by bringing retired U.S. or State flags to the event. Mr. Harington added, “There will be a brief ceremony at the beginning, then we will care for all the flags we receive. If individuals wish to retire their family flag, Legion members will be on hand to assist.”
