Fraudsters posing as local Sheriff’s Office employees

There has been a recent resurgence of an old fraud scheme in the 4 state area.

The Newton County Sheriff’s Office released the following press statement regarding the situation.

PRESS RELEASE – FRAUD SCHEME

“The Newton County Sheriff’s Office has begun receiving complaints from citizens saying they have been getting calls from someone identifying themselves as Sheriff’s Office employees. Typically they are referring to court costs that haven’t been paid or warrants that have been issued

These calls are also happening in other counties across the state. The caller typically identifies themselves as either the Sheriff or another current employee. They demand money be paid to cover the costs of whatever scam they are pulling. Usually paid in some non-refundable gift card or similar item. These scams have occurred in the past and will happen in the future.

I want to remind everyone that neither this Sheriff’s Office nor any other Sheriff in the state operates like that. The scammer attempts to intimidate or scare the victim. Please do not fall for this. My best advice is just to hang up on the caller. If you have questions about this or want reassurance feel free to call us. Do not give anyone personal or financial information on the phone. These scams have been around for years unfortunately. If you have been a victim that has suffered loss please contact us immediately.”
