Columbus man sentenced for child sex crimes

26 years and one month in prison given to a man from southeast Kansas for child sex crimes.

38-year-old Brian Curtis Stewart, of Columbus, was sentenced following his two-day criminal trial in January.

The jury found Stewart guilty of one count of rape and five counts of aggravated incident liberties of a child, crimes which Stewart committed in 2016.

Stewart was prosecuted by Cherokee County Attorney Kurt Benecke.

Following the trial, Stewart was remanded to the custody of the Cherokee County Jail, where he remains pending transfer to the Kansas Department of Corrections.
