Property tax credit available in Jasper County

The Jasper County Commission adopted an ordinance in October of 2024, authorizing a real property tax credit for eligible taxpayers that takes effect this tax season.
To qualify, you have to be a Missouri resident, be 62 years or older, be an owner of a homestead or have a legal or equitable interest in such property as evidenced by written documents and be liable for the payment of real property taxes on such homestead in Jasper County. A homestead is a real property occupied by an eligible taxpayer as their primary residence.
“It applies to anyone 62 years or older that lives in Jasper County for us,” Jasper County Collector of Revenue Steve McIntosh told NewsTalk KZRG. “Newton County is doing something, but that’s not us. That’s something different. But if you’re 62 years or older, you have to own your principal residence and be responsible for the real estate taxes on that. … The ordinance that was passed by the Jasper County Commission on October 1st, as a matter of fact, of 2024, said that 2024 will be the initial year. That’s the year you freeze your taxes. So going forward, any increases in taxes will not be applicable. The difference between that and the frozen amount in 2024 will be the credit.”
Starting today, applications for tax credits shall be received on or before May 31 of each year in order to be eligible for the tax credit in the calendar year. If you are seeking the tax credit, you must submit an application in writing on forms approved by the county containing the required information. Applications will be presented to the County Commission for approval or denial.
“First of all, in the tax bills we sent out in November of 24, we had an insert that said, if you’re 62 years or older and you live in your homestead, your principal residence, you might qualify for this,” McIntosh said. “Send this back to us with your mailing address and name and we’ll send you an application. The result of that is almost 7,500 applications that are going in the mail.”
You can find applications online at jaspercountycollector.com. The forms may also be picked up at the Collector of Revenue office in the Jasper County Courthouse, Carthage, or in the Jasper County Courts Building Joplin. The completed application must be returned in person.
